Biography

Matthew did their undergraduate degree in philosophy at the University of St Andrews. There they acheived a first class MA(Hons), and worked with Katherine Hawley on a research project on the Metaphysics of Gender.

They also spent a year abroad at Queen's University Canada, where they returned for  their Master's degree. During their Master's, also in philosophy, they acheived a GPA of 4.2, writing a thesis, "Bipartite Assertion: A New Account of Assertion, Defined in Terms of Responsibility and Explicit Presentation" under the guidance of David Bakhurst.

Shortly afterwards, Matthew moved to Sheffield, and recently finished a Ph.D on the Metaphysics of Gender, supervised by Jennifer Saul and Elizabeth Barnes. The thesis was passed with no corrections. Recently Matthew spent some time at MIT working with Sally Haslanger and organising the conference Minds of Our Own.

Following two short posts at the University of Reading and the University of Leeds, Matthew worked at the University of Edinburgh, in the Centre for Biomedicine, Self, and Society. Following this post, Matthew moved to Trinity College Dublin, where they now work as a research fellow in the Business School.

Beyond philosophy, Matthew enjoys batting in the height of summer, long walks in the peaks, and board game nights.

They have also been known to throw karaoke evenings and make interactive fiction games.
